Collage of volunteers

Yosili Amador is a Practical English for Success (PES) volunteer serving in a pueblo in Atlántico, Colombia.

How do you fall asleep at night when one of your worlds seems to be on hold?

Ese es el problema: us volunteers often caemos en la trampa, en el pensamiento that we are living two lives.

Una vida está allá, en los United and the other one is here.

Caemos preso, we are blinded with sadness and fear that the home we left behind is no longer ours.

Time seems to be flying, pero los días son largos.

Friends and family are moving on, forgetting to mention the little details our soul craves in order to sentirnos importante.

Como irme a dormir with this feeling of absence.

No soy de aquí, no soy de allá.

Mi querido voluntario, cierra los ojos, y duerme tranquilo. Tomorrow will be a new day.

Tomorrow you will realize que no vives dos vidas. The people you left back home will always be there y la gente que estás conociendo ahora será parte de lo que extrañaras algún día.

How do you fall asleep at night, mi querido voluntario?

Es fácil, te grita la vida. Life changes constantly, the carousel never stops going around.

Pero tú, mi querido voluntario, you need to understand you’re not living two lives, just one.

Cierra los ojos y disfruta el momento. Remember time is flying by and this chapter of your life will be over soon, este será uno de tus mejores recuerdos.

Close your eyes, my dear volunteer, mañana será otro día. Y mientras caes en un profundo sueño no olvides que siempre tienes que dar lo mejor de ti,

Así duerme un voluntario, siempre recordando the reason why they’re here. Realizing life didn’t stop, it just changed a little bit.

There’s no growth without change, mi querido voluntario.
